A Brief History
Leaksville-Spray Elementary School was completed in 1994. It has a distinctive design which is both attractive and functional. Housing Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, it provides a rich learning environment for all of its students. The new building replaced two other schools which were closed. To commemorate this event, two time capsules were created at Leaksville-Spray Elementary.
The Leaksville- Spray Elementary School serves as a source of pride for each of us because it represents the commitment and hope that the citizens of our community place upon education and the future. Leaksville-Spray Intermediate School provided this community with a rich tradition and model of learning throughout the community for nearly one hundred years. The Eden City Board of Education visualized the need for the construction of a replacement school that would serve to educate its students for the next century. Thus, the process began. After the merger to the Rockingham County School System, the vision of the ECS Board was completed. The Moseley Group from Richmond, Virginia designed the 600 student building which was built by the Hodgin Construction Company.
What is Unique about LSE?
Leaksville-Spray’s staff believes all children have the right to have highly qualified and dedicated teachers and other staff members who know that all children that walk through the door are special and deserve our very best. We are dedicated through the unique programs that we provide to the success of all children. At the same time, we set our standards high for student behavior, student character and the respect for all individuals in the building. We are a community of learners both children and adults. With the assistance and the involvement of our student’s parents, we believe that nothing can beat hard work and dedication.
A Closer Look at Leaksville-Spray
Leaksville-Spray was built in 1994. The unique architectural design provided that each grade level consist of a pod of 4 classrooms with 3-5 grades on one hall and PK-2 on the other. The Title I staff, EC staff, Guidance, Music, Art, and Media are located in the middle of these two areas for quick accessibility.
Leaksville-Spray consists of 22 K-5 classrooms. Additional staff consist of 10 Teacher Assistants, 2 Title I staff members, a full time School Counselor, Art, Music and PE teacher. The school also has a full time Media Coordinator. In addition, Leaksville-Spray has a full time speech pathologist and an assistant, a part-time PK Speech Pathologist, and three full-time Exceptional Children’s (EC) teachers. Rounding out the staff is a school nurse, school psychologist, social worker, AIG teacher, and additional tutors throughout the school year.
Leaksville-Spray hosts three open-houses a year along with monthly programs presented by each grade level. Our school counselor works with our students to promote Character and Career Education. Leaksville Spray participates in Title I Parental Informational Workshops, Relay for Life, Red Ribbon Week, Jump Rope for Heart, Hand-In-Hand, the DARE program and schedules a variety of cultural arts events such as author visits, theatrical groups, musical presentations and concerts. Students are provided opportunities, at each grade, to participate in field trips which offer enrichment and extended activities aligned to content standards.
School Performance Grade
Leaksville-Spray Elementary School has been designated as a low performing school by the North Carolina State Board of Education. As defined in G.S. 115C-105.37: “The State Board of Education shall identify low-performing schools on an annual basis. Low-performing schools are those that earn an overall school performance grade of D or F and a school growth score of "met expected growth" or "not met expected growth" as defined by G.S. 115C-83.15.”
Leaksville-Spray Elementary School received a School Performance Grade of D and a growth designation of Met for the 2022–2023 school year. Although we are committed to improving this score, it is important to remember that just as no one single score or grade tells the whole story of a student, neither does it tell you everything about the performance of a school or the opportunities that our school provides. We work hard to maximize student instruction through various opportunities.
